Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital introduces new physician

Using the latest guidelines and focusing on holistic care, Dr Aitchison is passionate about internal and LGBTQ+ medicine and aims to offer top-notch care, and solutions to a range of conditions, from common to complex.

Dr Aitchison obtained an undergraduate degree and medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. They went on to obtain their postgraduate diplomas at the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa in Primary Emergency Care and HIV Management. Dr Aitchison also graduated with a Master’s Degree in Medicine in Internal Medicine. After completing their internship,

Dr Aitchison served as a medical officer at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and completed specialist training on the Wits circuit.

According to Dr Aitchison, they chose internal medicine as their specialty because internal medicine is so incredibly broad and presents so many diagnostic and therapeutic challenges; it is exciting to find the answers.

“I have been working in internal medicine since 2016, and still love it every day,” Dr Aitchison said.

To them, choosing Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital was easy.

“The hospital has an amazing environment and with all the updates and renovations, is poised to be one of the top hospitals in Johannesburg. We have a great team at the hospital and treat a unique population,” they added.

They explain that one piece of advice they would give to their patients is to stop Googling your symptoms.

“Rather seek proper medical advice – medicine is too complex for Google or a ‘Facebook expert’ to diagnose or treat you,” they elaborated.

Where can you find Dr Aitchison relaxing?

Their idea of relaxing would be heading over to the gym, weight lifting for an hour or two, then coming home to their husband and fur-children, and, finally, chilling out on the couch with a good movie or series.

What are three things not a lot of people know about them?

“I am an avid gamer. I really enjoy immersing myself into a new world, going on adventures, and fighting off all manner of enemies, I’m a great cook and I really enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, and I am a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and aim to make this a focus of my practice,” Dr Aitchison concluded.
