UPDATE: City Power announces large Northside outage as new aluminum cables to be connected

CP has announced a large planned power outage in Wilgeheuwel and surrounding areas tomorrow to allow for the connection of the long-awaited new aluminum cables.

Todays (March 8) testing of the new aluminum electrical cables between Christiaan de Wet and Wilgeheuwel sub stations was a resounding success.

This according to City Power (CP) spokesperson Isaac Mangena.

“Both cables tested clear and Roodepoort Service Delivery Centre GM Sibusiso Xulu said he is confident the cabling replacement will reduce the recurring theft and constant outages that were experienced in the last few weeks.”

Good news for residents is that the constant tripping of electricity at the switching station should soon be something of the past.

Bad news is that electricity will be off throughout the area for most of the day tomorrow (March 9) to allow for the connection of the two new cables. According to Mangena electricity will be off from 8:00 to 16:00.

The following areas are affected:

• Wilgeheuwel Ext 3 and 7
• Strubens Valley Ext 7
• Honeydew Ridge Ext 5, 8, 9, and 10
• Radiokop Ext 16 and 23

“We are confident that we can get the job done tomorrow,” says Xulu. “But we have to guard against getting people’s hopes up. It is a complicated system and there is a lot that can potentially go wrong,” says Xulu.

“Our teams on the ground are very competent and they will do their utmost to complete this project tomorrow.”
