JMPD urges community to be safe during December

"I want to wish you all a happy and prosperous festive season where safety remains an integral part of all the celebrations."

As part of his festive season message, Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) Spokesperson, Xolani Fihla said that the festive season is one of the busiest periods of the year as criminals take advantage of this time of year.

“The safety of residents and visitors remain a top priority,” said Fihla.

Fihla reminded those who will be travelling to various destinations across the country, that their vehicles must be in a roadworthy condition to avoid unnecessary breakdowns and avoidable accidents.

“As a driver, it’s important to have valid documentation to operate a motor vehicle on the road. Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol and avoid excessive speeding and reckless driving. When leaving your home, make sure to close all the windows and doors and if you have an alarm system, make sure that it is properly functioning.
Inform your family, neighbours or friends of your intended destination, and request that they check activities around your home. Lock in all tools such as axes, spades, picks, and ladders away, these can be used to gain access to your house by criminals.

“At shopping malls, avoid carrying valuable items in handbags and pockets. Never keep a large amount of cash in your purse or wallet. Be alert to your surroundings when withdrawing money from an ATM and choose one that is in a crowded area. Be aware of who is standing near you or behind you near the ATM, and never accept any assistance from anyone, especially when you are about to enter your PIN.

“When leaving the ATM, ensure no one is following you or else go immediately into the nearest shop or report to a mall security guard for safety. It’s important that, before coming to the mall, you park your vehicle in a crowded area. Parking in a secluded area makes it easier for criminals to rob you. Triple-check that the vehicle is locked to avoid criminals trying to remotely jam the locking signal from your key.

“Avoid being distracted and always be alert to your surroundings. I want to wish you all a happy and prosperous festive season where safety remains an integral part of all the celebrations,” said Fihla.
