Street lights always on amid heavy load-shedding

According to Jan Kemp he personally reported the issue at the City Power office in Florida three times.

While South Africans have been experiencing successive rounds of load-shedding, it seems City Power isn’t too bothered about its electricity consumption.

According to 8th Avenue resident Jan Kemp the street lights where he lives have been on day and night for months on end. The 78-year-old resident has been residing in his Roodepoort home for the past 53 years and indicated that he has never been this disappointed in the system.

“The only time these lights are off is when it’s load-shedding. Otherwise, you can expect to see a lot of street lights on during the day. Are we not facing a serious electricity issue?” he said.

The ever-burning lights can be seen a few blocks south of 8th Avenue and a few blocks north up to the Ontdekkers Service Road.

According to Kemp he personally reported the issue at the City Power office in Florida three times.

“I have also contacted countless officials over the past few months – to no avail. I just get the sense that they aren’t very willing to come and have a look,” he explained.

“The last time I was at the City Power office, one of the prominent officials said he’d send someone out to investigate. It’s a week and a half later and as far as I know no one has come out yet. I simply don’t know where to turn anymore.”

According to Ward 84 councillor Johannes Goosen he is aware of the issue and escalated the matter to the relevant City Power officials.

“I would like to encourage the residents of Ward 84 to report their municipal issues to me. I will always see what I can do and take it up with the relevant department officials,” he said.

According to CP Spokesperson, Isaac Mangena they are aware of the matter but can only dispatch a team once a call is logged.

Should residents experience any issues with their electricity, they are encouraged to first log a call with City Power. They can do this by visiting www.citypower.co.za, clicking on the ‘Fault Logging’ option and following further instructions. Residents can also log a call via the City Power Call Centre on 011 490 7484.
