Literacy is one of the most important skills, and without the ability to read, write and understand, the future of society becomes stunted.

On Thursday, September 8 Region C Libraries celebrated this important day, with Florida Regional Library hosting the main International Literacy Day event with an in-person and live-streamed programme.

It was aimed at children and adults, with Johannesburg-based author Tracy Millar starting the event by reading her picture book for children entitled Gerald and friends.

Dodge explained the importance of books and reading, while also encouraging attendees to try their hand at writing stories.

Having published four books, her experience with the writing and publishing process was very enlightening and helpful, especially to a couple of budding authors in attendance.

Tea and refreshments were enjoyed afterwards, giving the community a chance to chat with Dodge.

Region C Libraries collaborated with Unisa, and were honoured to host Professor Moeketsi Letseka (UNESCO chair on ODL at Unisa) as the keynote speaker of the day.

The morning was brought to an end with a word of encouragement by the manager of Library Services for Unisa Gauteng, Victor Mbuqe.

Assistant Director for Libraries, Johannes Mesenya wrapped up the proceedings with a vote of thanks on behalf of the Director of CoJ Libraries.
