102-year-old English woman outlives the Queen

Mrs Baker simply described herself as lucky and fortunate to reach the astonishing age of 102 years.

A woman from Witpoortjie Village celebrated a major milestone on Tuesday, September 13 when she turned a whopping 102.

The lovely Dorris Baker – affectionately known by her caregivers as Ms Baker – was one of the first residents to occupy the retirement village in 1990 when she immigrated from England.

“When my husband passed away, I came to live with my son who also immigrated from England. Since then it’s been just the two of us – and his beautiful wife of course. My son is all I have and I’m proud to say that he’s one of the good ones,” she said.

Ms Baker was ecstatic when her caregivers and friends from the village surprised her with a birthday party on her special day. There were cake, candles, treats, drinks and some good company. It’s safe to say the birthday girl enjoyed every minute of it.

When asked about the secret to a long life, she simply replied, “I’m just very lucky I guess”.

Born in 1920 she experienced history being made as she lived through the second world war, the first moon landing, a pandemic and the Queen of England’s entire reign, to name just a few.

Village manager Dawie Lee described Ms Baker as calm, exemplary and a pleasure to have at the village.

“On behalf of the village I wish our dearest Ms Baker a very happy birthday. Ms Baker and her son have always been very sweet and supportive people. We hope to still have them here for many years to come,” Lee concluded.
