Four people were arrested on suspicion of committing a street robbery on August 31.
Members of private security firms Vice Protection Services and Ingelozi Security Solutions were doing their morning patrols near Northgate Mall when they were approached by a man claiming that a woman had been robbed nearby. While on their way to attend to the female victim, the witness pointed out the silver Hyundai Getz the four suspects had used to commit the crime and the teams jumped into action.
Vice’s Operations Manager, Andries Neethling and Ingelozi’s Jaco Uys alerted the police and began to track the silver hatchback. The pair, whose companies have a joint venture in the area, had already seen the vehicle earlier that morning and had noted it as suspicious. The suspects soon noticed they had a tail and attempted to flee but Neethling and Uys followed them to Boundary Road where they apprehended them and waited for police to effect the arrest.
The four suspects, three men and one women, where found with one bag of marijuana, a knife and suspected stolen items. Honeydew police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan, confirmed the incident and stated that the suspects were being processed at Honeydew police station.
Police warned that this type of street robbery was a crime of opportunity, one that has become a trend in the area, and warned pedestrians not to openly display valuables while walking along busy roads.
