Brandon wins best energy award

There were 21 bronze medallists, 31 silver medallists, and 10 gold medallists this year.

Brandon de Greef, a Grade 11 learner at Crawford International Ruimsig won the Best Energy Award at the Eskom Expo on Saturday, July 23. This was the second time Brandon entered the Expo and won this region’s expo. He was inspired to enter an alternative for high-voltage insulation as his project because he saw a gap in the industry. He will be going on to the next round of the competition in October.

On the Saturday, 152 learners from the region gathered at the Wits University Flower Hall to showcase their innovative science, engineering and social investigations, while 55 judges from the various competition categories and Eskom Expo enthusiasts evaluated and scored the 120 projects on display.

This regional expo was one of 35 planned in all provinces across South Africa, and it was the first Eskom Expo physical science fair since the Covid-19 pandemic started in 2019. There were 21 bronze medallists, 31 silver medallists, and 10 gold medallists. Parktown Girls High School learners received the most gold medals and medals overall.

Learners in the region who advance to the ISF, which will be held virtually in October, will compete against the best performing young scientists around the country. At this prestigious event, learners stand a chance to win prizes and bursaries, along with scholarships and various opportunities. Learners also stand a chance to be selected to showcase their research or innovation at an international science fair in the United States of America, Asia, Europe and the rest of Africa.

“I would like to encourage anyone with an innovative idea or solution to a problem to enter the Eskom Special Awards next year!” says Brandon.
