City Power technician remembered at emotional memorial service

"Van Vuuren was not just a City Power employee but someone the community of Roodepoort knew and looked up to."

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, August 2 for the City Power senior technician Kallie van Vuuren who was electrocuted while working on a mini-substation on Molopo Road in Wilro Park.

Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) MMC Councillor Michael Sun, City Power leadership and staff joined the Van Vuuren family for the memorial service at the Roodepoort Service Delivery Centre (SDC) in Florida.

City Power General Manger Sibusiso Xulu who shared some words of condolences to the family, opened the service and welcomed the attendees.

Van Vuuren who worked for the power utility for 20 years was described by those who knew him better as a humble person who got along with everybody.

“City Power and its customers in Roodepoort have lost a dedicated employee; he was known as ‘Engineer Kallie’ and will be dearly missed. Condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues,” said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.

Councillor Sun also addressed the attendees and said Van Vuuren was not just a City Power employee but someone the community of Roodepoort knew and looked up to.

“Our technicians are often left with the burden of facing criminals who are dangerous and want to steal our infrastructure. It is a great loss to us and his family. I hope that through time his family will heal and recover from this devastating and unfortunate incident. Remember that we are here for you,” said Councillor Sun.

Van Vuuren is survived by his wife and two children.

City Power officials visited the family on Friday, July 29.
