Ward 86 residents roll up their sleeves to bring Mandela Day joy to the elderly

Ward councillor Chantelle Fourie-Shawe arranged repainting of Avondrus Old Age Home perimeter fence

Volunteers and ward governance members brought a gentle helping of rejuvenation to Avondrus Old Age Home, July 17.

Spreading the Mandela Day goodwill, Ward 86 councillor, Chantelle Fourie-Shawe arranged a day to spruce up the only council-owned retirement facility in her ward. Situated opposite the Recreation Centre in Ninth Ave, the facility often struggles with overgrown bushes and lack of maintenance.

Arriving at the facility with metal enamel paint for the palisade fence, gardening implements and assorted tools, the volunteers got to work. From 09:00 to just after lunch, the 15 volunteers gave the exterior of the facility a bright facelift, much to the pleasure of those staying in the small facility.

Councillor Fourie-Shawe was happy with the day’s turnout, saying “The old age home’s palisade desperately needed a new coat of paint. So Ward 86 residents donated paint and other materials to make this possible. We had a good turnout of volunteers and even the old age home residents jumped in to help – a small act of kindness that means the world to the elderly at this home. We will continue to take hands and take back our suburbs.
