Makatsa and Mahlori’s chick is growing up fast

Seven weeks old last Tuesday, Makatsa is constantly feeding it prey caught by her and Mahlori.

The black eagle followers find it hard to believe that it has been seven weeks since Makatsa and Mahlori’s chick hatched, bringing hope to yet another successful breeding season.

Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR) monitors have been braving the cold to ensure that everything is going well with the black eagles at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden (WSNBG).

BEPR confirmed to the Record that Makatsa, Mahlori and the yet to be named chick are doing well, with both adults bringing in green spray daily to keep the nest clean while feeding the youngster.

“Once again, thanks to David Whyte for sharing some eagle photos with BEPR. As can be seen, the chick is growing fast. Seven weeks old last Tuesday, Makatsa is constantly feeding it prey caught by her and Mahlori.

“Both adults are constantly cleaning and sanitizing the nest with green spray. All is going well and we will keep the community updated,” said BEPR photographer and observer Johann van den Berg.

Tuesday, July 5 saw all the pensioners in the Project meeting at their usual monitoring spot at WSNBG before the adult eagles gave them and all the visitors the most spectacular flying displays – and to top it all, the youngster decided to show its face.

Community members are encouraged to come join the monitors on Tuesday mornings and share the magnificent sights. The BEPR monitors are normally on duty on Saturday and Sunday mornings as well.
