Local artists exhibit at Matholesville community hall

As varied in their mediums as they are in their concerns, these artists represent just a selection of the variety of work emerging from South Africa today.

The West Rand boasts a wealth of artistic talent and the new crop of artists are no exception as they explore concepts ranging from fashion and identity politics to observations of the past and present.

Up and coming local artists Athi Vandala, Danny Riet and Sibusiso Mfeketho’s paintings were recently showcased during a Youth Safety Dialogue event in Matholesville on Friday, June 24.

According to the organisers, the new art initiative aims to give local artists as well as up-and-coming artists in Johannesburg Region C the opportunity to showcase their artwork.

The Roodepoort, Sol Plaatje, Durban Deep and Matholesville communities do not boast as many art events as other communities, and local artists are finding it harder to introduce their artwork to the public.

One of the organisers, Siyabonga James told the Record that in the next art event they would like to feature unknown, as well as established artists, and give them the opportunity to promote their work and develop their talent.

“Sports development and recreational activities, including arts and culture are among the top priorities that need to be activated in communities to fight against social ills,” said James.
