Positive parenting session held on Youth Day

Parents were made aware of the change they can make by merely adjusting or even letting go of certain toxic and harmful parenting styles.

Thursday, June 16 saw the Ipeleng Cares Foundation (ICF) host a Fleurhof Community Safety and Positive Parenting session at the Fleurhof Congregation Church.

Founder of ICF, Ipeleng Mofokeng welcomed all attendees before delivering a presentation on the connection between aggressive parenting, bullying and violence in schools and communities.

Parents were made aware of the change they can make by merely adjusting or even letting go of certain toxic and harmful parenting styles.

Present on the day were the Department of Social Development’s Regional Manager Jabulani Phakoe, and Wagheed and Barbie Davids from the Fleurhof CPF.

“For us these sessions help in educating parents on how to prevent aggressive parenting with its negative effects,” said Jabulani.

Jabulani told the Record that these kinds of sessions from the families programme within the department are very critical to them, because they strongly believe that they help to reduce domestic violence and other social ills that are facing families in communities.

“The youth of 1976 fought for their emancipation; but today’s youth face challenges of safety at home, schools and in their communities.

“Our positive parenting session is the start of emancipating our youth from social ills that affect their progress negatively.

“If we can create conducive environments for our children to thrive where they are validated, encouraged, seen and heard, we have a better chance of creating confident children who will be more inclined to build instead of destroy communities,” said Ipeleng.
