Spark School Witpoortjie learners and parents donate to charity

The collected items were donated by the school’s learners and their parents who saw the need to support the less fortunate.

On Thursday, June 2 Spark School Witpoortjie delivered baskets filled with sanitary towels, toothpaste, soap, face cloths and deodorant to an organisation called Africa Food for Thought.

According to the school, this was part of their second community outreach project this year – Project Surfboard.

The collected items were donated by the school’s learners and their parents who saw the need to support the less fortunate.

The project originated from one of the school’s Grade 4 teachers, Palesa Honoko who implemented a code system with her female scholars.

Instead of asking for a pad when they start their period at school or have an accident, the learners would ask for a surfboard.

When the time came to brainstorm community initiatives, the school collectively agreed that collecting sanitary pads and toiletries for those in need would be a great idea.

“People donate clothes and food a lot but we tend to forget that hygiene also plays a huge part in the human experience,” said Palesa.

Spark School Witpoortjie’s sixth core value is Cooperation which plays a huge role in their family and community engagement initiatives.

According to the school, it’s important not only to understand the community that surrounds them but also to work with them and build meaningful relationships.

“Our learners and families come from these communities; what’s important to them is important to us.

“We look after our own and we are teaching our kids how to treat thy neighbour,” said Palesa
