After the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) reviewed the online system and the previous two-phased approach as well as an analysis of various online parent surveys and stakeholder consultations, the system has now been changed to follow a single application process.

According to Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lusufi, this process will allow all applicants to apply at the same time during the application period.

To apply parents and guardians are advised to visit www.gdeadmissions.gov.za. They will receive SMS notifications of placements offers to either accept or decline from October 3 to 31.

The community is reminded that grade R learners will not automatically be accepted to grade 1 without an application even if they apply to the schools where they are currently enrolled in.

Parents and guardians are urged by GDE to upload or submit certified copies of the following documents within seven days of applying:

• Parent and child ID or passport

• Refugee permit

• Asylum-seeker permit

• Permanent-residence permit

• Study permit

• South African birth certificate

• Proof of home address

• Proof of work address

• Latest school report and clinic card/ immunisation report (grade 1 only)

Applicants will be given up until August 26 to upload or submit their documents; however, documents that are uploaded or submitted after the application period closing date will be considered as incomplete.

The incomplete applications will only receive placement at available schools from December 1 to 15.

From August 10 to September 3, the first phase of the GDE Online Application for 2023 Admission Period will be accessible for grade 7 learners currently in the Gauteng public school system to apply to grade 8.

The second phase of the 2023 GDE Admissions Period will begin on September 13 and close on October 8. Phase 2 accepts grade 1 applications as well as applications from outside of Gauteng public schools up to grade 8.

During Phase 1, parents of learners that are currently in grade 7 public ordinary schools in Gauteng will enrol their children in grade 8

During Phase 2, parents of learners who need admission to grade 1 and the remaining grade 7 learners from independent schools and other provinces will make applications to grade 1 and grade 8 for the 2023 academic year.
