Twelve injured in Main Reef accident

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, officers fined the taxi driver for driving without a driving licence, and the bakkie was issued a discontinue notice because it was damaged severely in the accident.

On Saturday, May 28, 12 people were injured when a bakkie and a minibus taxi collided on Main Reef Road in Roodepoort.

ER24 and other services arrived shortly after 12:00 to find the two vehicles in the left-hand lane and several adults along the side of the road.

JMPD confirmed that their officers attended to an accident that happened at about 11:20am on Main Reef Road in Roodepoort involving a white Toyota Quantum and a white Nissan Hardbody bakkie.

Its officers found five people at the scene, which included the drivers of both vehicles and three passengers from the minibus taxi.

It’s alleged that both vehicles were travelling from west to east on Main Reef Road when the accident happened, of which the cause has not yet been determined.

The driver of the taxi escaped injury, but two taxi passengers sustained serious injuries and another one was injured slightly. Emergency Services transported all of them to Helen Joseph Hospital.

The driver of the bakkie sustained serious injuries and he was taken to the same hospital.

“A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened at the Roodepoort police for further investigation,” said Fihla.
