Look out for Mason the baboon!

'It is normal for Mason to be travelling the route he is currently using and there is still a chance of him being trapped.'

On  Thursday, May 26 a statement was released by the Roodekrans Community Watch warning residents about a baboon which has been named Mason, roaming the streets.

Mason is believed to live in the green belt between Vuurlelie Street and Totius Road. According to the statement, the baboon has an injured foot and steps are being taken to rescue and relocate him.

Community members are encouraged to let the RCW know should they spot the primate. Residents are also urged to refrain from chasing him, and also to keep dogs away from him as he poses no threat.

In another social media post by the NSPCA, Nicole Venter encourages residents not to follow Mason as it will make him feel he is being chased and he will not stop long enough for potential trapping.

“Please will all security companies and all assisting parties ensure that Mason is not being tailed?” the post read.

“Additionally, please note that it is normal for Mason to be travelling the route he is currently using and there is still a chance of him being trapped.”

The post went on to say that it is unlikely that there is a second baboon. There are also a number of factors that could result in Mason looking slightly different, including his right hind leg having healed enough for him to use it again.

“Unless there is evidence, such as footage, of two baboons together, it is safe to assume that the baboon being sighted is Mason. Please continue to post sightings and please call if there is anything urgent – such as crowds forming around Mason,” Nicole said in the post.

Residents who have spotted the baboon are urged to contact the NSPCA on 071 593 6523.

We appreciate all your efforts in assisting us with Mason.
