The West Rand Chatroom bids farewell to one of their own

"For every article I wrote, he would call and be thankful on behalf of the Chatroom."

The impact of a death is devastating and causes heartache that no one can ever heal, but hope is restored by the soothing feeling that love leaves in the form of a memory that no one can ever take away.

Family, friends and the West Rand Chatroom this week bade a sad farewell to Patchappan Pat Moodliar who passed away on Tuesday, May 17 in Durban.

Pat was born on May 15, 1949 in Chatsworth, Durban. His wife passed away from cancer in 2002, and he is survived by three sons and four grandsons.

Those who knew Pat remember his warm personality and unique sense of humour that somehow always managed to make an impact.

Back in 2019, Pat who is one of the founders of the Rainbow Samaritans put a smile on the face of his best friend of many years, Zac Grobler, who also happens to be a founding member of the organisation.

Pat surprised Zac with a wonderful gift for his 82nd birthday which he celebrated on May 15, 2019.

A creative Pat enlarged a number of Zac’s photos and put them in a frame as a gift for his buddy – just one of the many good deeds that Pat will be remembered by.

According to his daughter-in-law Deshree Reddy, Pat will always be remembered for his great big heart and love for everyone in the family.

The West Rand Chatroom sent a message to the Northsider in memory of Pat, just to reflect on the kind of man he was in the community of Roodepoort.

In memory of our dear Pat Moodliar:

We will always commemorate Pat’s beautiful humanity; to us Pat is not just a pillar in the community, one of the founding members of our West Rand Chatroom, but also a father, uncle, brother, and beloved friend.

There will never be a moment when we will forget his beautiful humanity, a man whose integrity and heart shone through everything he did.

We are grateful for everything he did for us, from his generous hospitality to the extra mile he would choose to walk.

We remember every member he phoned, every person he visited, and every time he assisted with hospital and treatment visits with others.

Pat always helped if he could, even at times when he bore his own challenges with his health bravely.

Pat was truly someone who taught those around him how love acts, and what true care looks like.

We will always remember his warm heart, caring nature, and unwavering example of being the change to make the world around him a more loving and caring place.

We will miss Pat dearly, but his example in showing everyone he met how to love, respect, and care unconditionally will continue to inspire us.

We will always strive to follow Pat’s example of love and living to the fullest. Though we mourn the loss of Pat’s presence, we will cherish and honour the memories of your life with us forever.

Love and greetings until we meet again, West Rand Chatroom.

Former Northsider journalist, Siso Naile who worked closely with Pat and covered some of the West Rand Chatroom events and gatherings also expressed his sorrow following the passing of Pat.

“I’m still in disbelief that Uncle Pat from the Chatroom is no more. What a wonderful soul, always beaming with love and wisdom. As I reminisce my first encounter of Uncle Pat at the Chatroom, he was so welcoming and accommodating. I learnt so much about the different kinds of cancer and its treatment by sticking around him as he imparted the knowledge during the meetings.

“Uncle Pat will be dearly missed by me for his fatherly role. I recall how sad he would be if I wasn’t the journalist covering their meeting but to his delight, I would make sure to squeeze my time to accommodate him because he was always eager to work with me.

“For every article I wrote, he would call and be thankful on behalf of the Chatroom. RIP Uncle Pat, and condolences to your family and all your loved ones,” said Siso.
