No disaster too big for the Lions
In addition to the truckload of goods sent to struggling communities, local Lions clubs also made cash donations to clubs on the ground.
When the most recent natural disaster forced many KwaZulu-Natal communities to cry out for help, the local Lions heard their desperate plea loud and clear.
According to Lions Club Wilro Park President, Sandy van Heerden they sent out an appeal to all Lions Clubs in the zone, who extended the plea to friends, families and communities.
“The response was truly immense as donors assisted with non-perishable foods, water, blankets, clothes, baby hampers and toiletries. We were overwhelmed by the amount of goods that was dropped off at the Lions Club of Wilro Park at such short notice. It just goes to show that kindness really matters,” she said.
She went on to say that the support from the Lions and their communities including Krugersdorp, Wilro Park, Helderkruin, Weltevreden Park, Clearwater, Northcliff and Lenasia was astonishing.
“We are all connected and it was so heartwarming to see how quickly our Lions sprung into action and answered the call from KZN for emergency help,” Sandy said.
In addition to the truckload of goods sent to struggling communities, local Lions clubs also made cash donations to clubs on the ground to assist them with the emergency aid so urgently needed.
“We heard the stories of the crèches and schools that had been badly damaged or washed away. The children were left only with the clothes on their backs – their homes were gone too along with all they owned,” she explained.
“Where there is a need, there are Lions and all Lions rallied together to shop, sort, pack and label parcels to help fill these urgent needs. Soon the truck arrived and was packed full from top to bottom and on its way with valuable cargo. We wanted to make sure that it reached its destination as quickly as possible and now we’re already busy with our next load.”
