Curro Wilgeheuwel dress up for World Book Day

The Fairy Godmother, Puss in Boots, Shrek and Princess Fiona were out and about early in the morning to welcome all the characters to school.

Curro Academy Wilgeheuwel Independent School celebrated World Book Day enthusiastically while a variety of activities were planned for all classes to encourage reading habits among learners, instead of resorting to online media for every solution.

Friday, April 22 saw learners and teachers turn out in amazing costumes as they took on the challenge of dressing up as a character from their favourite book.

The Fairy Godmother, Puss in Boots, Shrek and Princess Fiona were out and about early in the morning to welcome all the characters to school.

“Our teachers didn’t want to miss out on the fun on World Book Day – such amazing and interesting ideas. Well done to everyone who dressed up,” said school marketer, Tammy van der Walt.

A special congratulations went out to teacher Daniella Charles on winning the prize for the best dressed as she was dressed as the kind witch from the book Room on a Broom.

World Book Day is an annual celebration of all things literature; a day to reflect on the enjoyment of books and reading, across all generations.

The day was set up in 1995 to encourage everyone to read more, and discover the magical worlds that books can offer.

World Book Day encourages children to read more of their favourite books, it’s a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNSECO) initiative, and international organisations from the three major sectors of the book industry – publishers, booksellers and libraries – are all involved in spreading the word.

Every year World Book Day is on April 23 in South Africa, and across most of the world.

This date is significant because three of the world’s most well-known authors all died on this date.

They were William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
