Municipal entities beginning collaborative clean-up of Roodepoort CBD

Ward-by-ward approach not a once-off but a long-term concerted maintenance effort.

When every piece fits together, an grander picture can be enjoyed.

Members from the City of Johannesburg’s most important entities turned the Roodepoort CBD into a hive of high-visibility activity on April 19. Under the guidance of Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) who also contributed additional resources, a briefing was held at Roodepoort City Hall before each entity deployed teams to pre-identified areas of concern.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) focused on skoffelling and pothole repair, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) trimmed verges and fields, while Johannesburg Water identified leaking pipes, faulty water meters or other infrastructure that may require attention. City Power was shown several areas where vandalism and theft were rife while the Department of Social Development addressed the issue of displaced people.

The increased activity throughout the wards and across regions is part of the multi-party government’s commitment to getting the basics right.

“It is about a concerted effort toward our key priorities. This is not a one-day project but will continue until the job is done. We want to get into the habit of regular basic maintenance because the more we maintain the less we have to repair and fix,” said CRUM Regional Director, Mlamleli Belot.

The ward by ward approach hopes to create a revolving cycle of maintenance that will see constant activity by the municipal entities. Regional Director Belot urged those who engage in community clean-ups not to stop the hard work, encouraging them to contact their ward councillor who can arrange bags and removals.
