Learners taught about the history of aviation

The excited group was transported back in time to 1971 when the Boeing 747 arrived in South Africa.

The Grade 3 to 7 learners from the West Rand Study Centre (WRSC) recently paid a visit to the South African Airways Museum at Rand Airport in Germiston.

There, local resident and Volunteer Docent at the Museum, Margaret Boshoff, entertained them on an imaginary international flight on board the gigantic 50-year-old Boeing 747 aircraft on display.

“The excited group was transported back in time to 1971 when the Boeing 747 arrived in South Africa as the first of its type to be delivered to SAA. On board they were shown just how the ‘Queen of the Sky’ – despite being the most advanced and luxurious aircraft for its time – brought air travel within reach of the average person,” SAA Museum Society Coordinator, Peter Boshoff said.

“Besides explaining in detail how passengers were pampered, Margaret explained many of the technical aspects that made this aircraft so special and well loved by all who worked and flew on it during its 32-year flying career with the national airline.”

Margaret followed up with stories related to the life of an international cabin attendant and some of the details of the intricate Emergency Operation Procedures all crew are taught and required to know before being licensed to fly.

Learners were also able to wander around the Aircraft Park to gain more insight into the history of aviation and to view the many other older aircraft, flight simulators and radio communication equipment on display.

“Lastly, they were able to satisfy their curiosity regarding possible career options available within the aviation field. We are sure there are several budding pilots, cabin crew and aircraft technicians among these young enthusiasts,” Peter said.

The museum will in fact be hosting an Aviation Careers Day event to coincide with Youth Day on June 16 – an excellent day for them to visit and get all their questions answered.
