Improved Florida Clinic welcomes community

What was once a three-bedroom house with four consultation rooms has been transformed into a bigger, cleaner and more modern building.

After five years of being closed for revamping, the new and improved Florida Clinic finally opened its doors again to the community.

On Tuesday, March 1 residents of Ward 70 had the opportunity to view the impressive new building. What was once a three-bedroom house with four consultation rooms has been transformed into a bigger, cleaner and more modern building.

Construction started in July 2017, and even though it was promised that a new and better clinic would be ready within eight months, the construction had been delayed continuously.

The new clinic resembles a mini hospital with 18 spacious consulting rooms, a pharmacy, an emergency stabilisation unit, counselling rooms, a group room for ARV treatments and TB therapy, a testing facility, and antenatal care. It also features an exciting play area for the little ones as well as a vegetable garden.

Measures have been put in place to eliminate any excuse to turn patients away. A 48 000 litre reserve-water tank stands at the front of the building to ensure the clinic does not run out of water, and solar panels and generators will ensure that there is always electricity.
According to Region C District Health Service Delivery Manager, Stella Uys, no new staff have been employed; instead existing staff within the City’s Health Department were moved to Florida Clinic, some of whom worked there before the clinic was closed for renovations.

The clinic is located at 8 Madeline Street in Florida and will be open from Monday to Friday, from 07:30 to 16:00.

“The clinic is eager to assist with all primary healthcare issues. Should an issue be outside of their scope, they will refer the patient to the appropriate facility,” Stella explained.

Please note that the Mobile Clinic will continue to visit Fleurhof Recreation Centre every Tuesday between 09:00 and 14:30.

Discovery’s Community Healthcare Centre also has a 24/7 casualty unit which the community can use for emergencies. The entrance is on Nourse Street, Discovery. They will also continue to operate as a Community Healthcare Centre (clinic).
