A tip-off from a vigilant member of the public led to an arrest by the Honeydew Police.

On March 1, Captain Andre Lamprecht from the Honeydew Police received a call from a member of the public who said she was following a vehicle that had recently been involved in a house robbery.

Captain Lambrecht headed in the direction the caller had indicated and coordinated with members from the Crime Prevention Unit. Once they reached the intersection of Beyers Naudé and CR Swart Drives, they hid their vehicles among the roadside foliage and waited. When the moment allowed, the police members pounced and surrounded the suspicious vehicle and apprehended its occupants.

Communications officer for the Honeydew Police, Warrant Officer Dave Stanton said four suspects were arrested and found to be in possession of house-breaking implements and gloves. “Later in the day it was confirmed that the suspects’ vehicle had been involved in a house robbery in Roodepoort in February. One of the suspects also had previous arrests and cases of housebreaking and house robbery against him.” He added that four flat-screen TVs were discovered in one of the suspects’ homes.

“I want to thank my members for their rapid response and professionalism,” Captain Lambrecht said. “This is a textbook example of good cooperation between alert members of the public and the police. I urge the public to get involved with their local Community Policing Forums and sector crime CPFs, and to download the My SAPS app.”

During the month of February, the police in Honeydew made 232 arrests. Twelve of them were for possession of drugs including dagga, crystal meth, heroin and nyaope. Fourteen shebeens were closed and 3 500 litres of liquor were subsequently confiscated.
