On February 28, Samuel Moyo was handed down a hefty prison sentence by the South Gauteng High Court for house robbery, murder and attempted murder. Moyo and an accomplice broke into the home of an elderly couple in Little Falls in August 2020. The two severely beat the homeowners, murdering one and gravely injuring the other.
Moyo and his accomplice were disturbed by a security company and they fled the scene on foot. Moyo was arrested shortly afterwards. Warrant Officer Bongani Ngcobo from the Honeydew Police, who was also the investigating officer in the case, discovered that Moyo had jumped the wall of a nearby house, and changed into clothing he had stolen to disguise himself. Ngcobo was able to get a DNA match linking the clothing that was left behind to Moyo. A bag that had been left behind at the crime scene was also matched to the criminal, also through DNA testing.
Ngcobo administered the case docket, took witness and victim statements and collected evidence, which were all used in court where he testified. Moyo was found guilty and handed down a sentence of life imprisonment for murder, and ten years imprisonment for attempted murder. During the sentencing, Ngcobo said, “Once the sentence was read to Moyo in court, he had a facial expression of complete and utter surprise and shock. I feel proud being part of bringing about justice and hopefully some comfort to the victims and their family.”
