Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela led a multi-discipline crime-fighting operation on February 17. The operation targeted various crime hot spots within Honeydew.

Communications officer for the Honeydew Police, Dave Stanton said the operation ran in three phases. Green-belt areas were targeted to address loiterers, illegal immigrants and transient criminals linked to burglaries, house robberies and cable theft.

“A roadblock and various vehicle control points were set up within our precinct. Approximately 500 vehicles and 1 300 occupants were stopped and searched. Three suspects were arrested for possession of dagga, one for inconsiderate driving and for crimen injuria. A total of 82 traffic-related fines to the value of R90 250 were issued.”

Retailers that had been identified were raided and more than R3 million worth of counterfeit goods were confiscated. “Three suspects were subsequently arrested for selling counterfeit goods. This part of the operation was conducted with the assistance of the Counterfeits Goods Unit.”

Stanton added that several liquor outlets were shut down and three suspects were arrested for selling alcohol without a liquor licence, and liquor to the value of R50 000 was confiscated.

Members from the Private Security Regulation Authority formed part of the operation, focusing on unregistered security officials. Twenty-four premises were inspected and four security officers were arrested for contravening the PSIRA act.
