Horison Methodist Church host first car boot sale of 2022

Event aimed at raising funds by selling unneeded household items

The Horison Methodist Church held their first car boot sale of the year on Saturday, February 5.

Community members were invited to set up a stand to clear out some of their unwanted clothes, accessories or any household goods that could be passed on for a small fee. The event is part community service and part fundraiser for the church, as bargain hunters would regularly walk away from the Cutten Street church with bundles of goods snapped up at dirt-cheap prices.

Hampered somewhat by the weather, car boots would usually be opened along the road outside the church to advertise the goods to passers-by. With damp boots but warm hearts, the stall owners set up inside the halls of the church, encouraging the public to waft around in search of the item they needed. For those working up an appetite, flavour-filled bacon and egg rolls were just a friendly order away.

The previous car boot sale, which also featured a white elephant section, was held in November and is a regular platform provided by the church. “It is a chance for anyone to get rid of unwanted items around the house. As they say ‘one man’s junk is another’s treasure’,” said Vanessa Killian, the congregations’ society steward. “We encourage people to recycle items to get them to people at cheaper cost. It is not only a fundraiser but a get-together. We are a church that likes to do things that bring the community together,” added Reverend Kim Alexander.

Stall owners keep all the profits from their stalls save for a nominal stall fee. The next car boot sale is in the pipeline and in the meantime, the church offers Tuesday Bible studies, a Thursday feeding scheme and of course, Sunday services.
