Man sleeping on Ham Street sidewalk arrested in connection with vehicle theft

Suspect allegedly also linked to gate motor thefts in other parts of Johannesburg

Private security and police secured the arrest of a suspected car thief on February 23.

The man was one of several people who have set up camp on the sidewalk at the section of Ham Street near General Pienaar Avenue. Police and private security tracked the suspect to the street in Witpoortjie where they executed the arrest of the rough sleeper.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the man was wanted in connection with the theft of a blue Tata Indica in Krugersdorp. It was alleged by bystanders that the vehicle had been used to commit the theft of gate motors. The man, known as ‘Kobus’, is said to have a male and female accomplice, but word from those involved in the arrest indicated that they had already been arrested in a separate incident.
