World Cancer Day is around the corner

This coming February 4th, many NGOs are dedicated to supporting those with cancer.

Cancer is not a war. It’s not a battle to be won. Cancer is a disease that plays by its own rules and does not always respond the way it is supposed to.

As many would know, it’s not easy going up against this often ruthless disease. In efforts of creating awareness and spreading hope, support and motivation for these brave patients, World Cancer Day is celebrated every year on February 4.

This coming February 4th, many NGOs dedicated to supporting those with cancer will be hosting a Cancer Awareness Drive at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital’s Radiation Department.

Organisations to visit the hospital include Warriors With A Purpose, Cansa and CanSurvive. They will also be joined by cancer survivors, motivational speakers as well as Sue Jameson who is known as the Joy Activist and Laughter Coach.

Warriors with a Purpose founder and director, Renée (better known as Ney) Singh encourages all communities to either support the drive at the hospital on the day, or to create their own drives by spreading hope to anyone they might know who is battling with cancer.

The Roodepoort-based Warriors with a Purpose is an NGO aimed at creating cancer awareness, motivating cancer patients, offering counselling, hosting fundraising events, and offering education and support throughout the journey.

“I was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma Stage 2 in 2017 – a type of breast cancer. I had a left breast myectomy and removal of lymph nodes. I had chemotherapy and radiation treatment. I was lucky enough to beat cancer and now I’m able to help others going through the same thing. I am truly blessed,” a very enthusiastic Ney said.

“The warriors out there should remember that we can’t control everything that happens in our lives. But we never give up in the Cancer Battle. We stand strong and courageous on the battlefield. We pick our swords and fight harder no matter the challenges we face. We will never give up this fight in cancer. Remember – you’re never alone in the Cancer Battle.”
