RNW help give family peace of mind with donated smart watch

Safety Angel device helps families protect loved ones from afar

Giving the elderly a dignified quality of life is the goal of any loving family.

As a way to provide a safety net, Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch (RNW) presented a new smart watch to one elderly Helderkruin resident on January 12. The 81-year-old Gerard Montagu suffers with dementia and has been known to go wandering the suburb’s streets with little to no warning, causing panic and worry for his family. Donated by the Schimansky family, Gerard now has a device strapped to his wrist which is far more than just for telling time.

The Safety Angel watch is the go-to product for families looking to monitor the safety and whereabouts of their loved one. Known as the Elderly Guardian, Gerard’s new smart watch monitors his vitals, tracks his location and has an SOS button should he ever find himself in trouble. Additionally, the watch is able to make and receive phone calls, has emergency contact details loaded, a medication reminder and an alarm, should the gentleman take a tumble.

“Thanks to the Schimansky family for helping us help our community. This is a great device that could help save a life,” said RNW’s Rudi Saunders, who presented the watch to Gerard.

“It gives us great peace of mind knowing we can always keep an eye on him. There is usually someone with him but if ever he is alone he can get quite frustrated,” said Gerard’s daughter, Alison. With a signal strapped to his arm, no matter where he goes there will always be a beacon of hope.
