Level 6 weather warning issued for Johannesburg

The weather service has urged those within the area to stay indoors if possible, stay away from metal objects and postpone travel arrangements. 

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 6 weather warning for severe thunderstorms tomorrow, December 27.

Reports indicate the possibility of damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles, livestock and livelihood. Heavy downpours expected to result in the flooding of roads, settlements and low lying areas and could possibly cause danger to life.

The weather service has urged those within the area to stay indoors if possible, stay away from metal objects and postpone travel arrangements.

Those in low lying areas are encouraged to place valuable items on desks or cupboards for protection. The weather service further urged community members to keep contact with their local disaster manager, council leader or listen to the radio for updates.

Amongst the areas affected:

  • City of Johannesburg
  • Mogale City
  • Rand West City – Randfontein and Westonaria
  • Merafong City
