Time, life and love

It's not about the perfect gifts, but the priceless gifts.

Lanie Lotriet, Record journalist writes:

Christmas is around the corner and while many may experience feelings of stress or anxiety around getting that perfect present for their partner, children, parents or friends, it’s important to remember what the most valuable gifts in life are.

As we all know, Covid has forced us to become constantly aware of our fragile mortality in a very short period of time. By now, we have all lost someone to this merciless enemy, and those who haven’t should consider themselves incredibly lucky.

It is unfortunate that no amount of money will ever be able to bring those loved ones back to life. By this time we should all know that the most valuable gifts in life are well, priceless.

I think the true gifts should be considered time, life and love. Time well spent with friends and family is never time wasted. The elderly folk might agree when I say that it’s the memories that keep us alive when we’re old and grey.

Secondly, it’s important that we celebrate life. Celebrate those who are important to you as they might not be here tomorrow. Call your friends first and visit your parents as often as possible. Remember – they’re getting older too. Life is too precious to take those closest to you for granted.

Lastly and most crucial – love. There’s a saying that goes ‘Love those who love you when you have nothing to offer but your company’. Spend this Christmas with those you love, and know that they too are gifting you some of the most treasured gifts in life. Time, life and love.

With this I would like to wish the ‘Poort a happy, wholesome Christmas and a happy new year.
