Christmas lunch for the visually impaired

Despite the gloomy weather almost 30 guests gathered to enjoy the lovely afternoon.

Being blind in a world suited for the sighted can be challenging, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. On Sunday, December 4 Egoli Blind – a non-profit organization of and for the visually impaired – hosted a special Christmas lunch for both existing and potential members at the Witpoortjie Bowling Club.

“We were hoping to recruit more members as well as for fellow visually impaired people to exchange thoughts and advice regarding their situations in which they may find themselves,” André Manders from Egoli Gold said.

He went on to say that the organisation currently focuses on the following three elements: • Job creation and upliftment of the visually impaired – This includes job search for the visually impaired in the private and government sector. They also help members to start their own businesses and provide the relevant training. • The use of technology and helping aids – They focus on training and information pertaining to computers and aids that would simplify the lifestyle for the visually impaired. • Social meetings: Egoli Blind arranges functions and gatherings where visually impaired and non-visually impaired people can interact with the aim of learning from one another. These features include activities such as horse riding, motorcycle rides, dining outings and botanical gardens visits to name just a few.
