Three hijacking suspects confirmed dead after Wednesday afternoon shootout

Hijacking victim rescued after dramatic shootout

Three suspects have been killed following a shootout with police on December 8.

A Hawks-led operation had tracked the suspects who were believed to be connected to a string of vehicle thefts across Johannesburg. Targeting Volkswagen Polos, the thugs had just carried out a hijacking when authorities made their move. In conjunction with multiple law-enforcement branches, the teams pounced on the suspected hijackers along Fifth Avenue, a short distance away from Du Toit Street.

With the owner of the hijacked Polo being held captive, the hijackers opened fire as soon as they were approached by authorities. In the ensuing shootout, law enforcement killed three of the suspects, wounding two other suspects but unfortunately, the hijacking victim also sustained two gunshot wounds and is currently in intensive care. Authorities recovered three firearms, ammunition and cellphones from the suspects’ vehicles.
