Troublesome intersection claims life of beloved man

Ward councillor makes request to JRA to assess possibility of traffic-calming measures.

A family have been turned inside out after losing a beloved anchor.

A motorcycle accident claimed the life of 58-year-old Johan Coetzer on the morning of Wednesday, November 24.

Johan was going about his usual morning commute on his motorcycle when he collided with another vehicle at the corner of West Avenue and The Highway. The passengers of the other vehicle escaped any serious harm but sadly, Johan was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics who attended the incident.

Travelling through the busy intersection, the route was one Johan had taken almost every day for three years while on his way to work in Alberton. Residents claim the intersection is growing increasingly dangerous and have made attempts to bring the situation to the attention of authorities.

Many commuters have highlighted the questionable driver behaviour at the intersection and provided suggestions that could help alleviate potential problems.

“I have taken note of the fatal accident which occurred at this intersection as well as previous accidents. In light of this I have requested Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) traffic engineering department to assess the intersection and evaluate the possibility of changes which may make it safer. I appeal to all road users to drive responsibly and in a considerate manner. The loss of life and injury to those affected in these incidents are of deep concern,” stated Ward 70 councillor, Caleb Finn.

Johan leaves behind a grieving family frustrated with how their loss could have been prevented. “

It is really sad that the situation has become so dangerous at that intersection. The couple who live on the corner told me that there had been an accident there earlier in the week. How many more people must get hurt there for something to be done?” said a family member of Johan’s who preferred not to be named. At this stage further questions to JRA have remained unanswered but hopes are that a solution can be found soon to prevent any further damage or loss of life.

Tracy Jackson: They should turn that into a four-way stop. I also had an accident at that precise spot with a Mr Delivery motorcycle and my car. That is a horrible road !!

Jp Eleveld: Absolutely horrible road. Speed bumps and a circle are desperately needed there. Candice Woest: My deepest sympathy to his family. This is really heartbreaking Floyd Happymore: Some drivers don’t stop. It’s the drivers driving on The Highway who should stop and check both ways.
