Music and conservation are this artist’s passions

Shaun is an up-and-coming singer from Muldersdrift.

Shaun Steynberg may be pursuing a music career but the 25-year-old Muldersdrift resident considers himself an all-round entertainer. Better known as Shaun Dee on stage, he has several talents and is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and videographer.

The artist confessed that growing up, he had issues finishing anything he started, “… but I got to a place where I found myself and realised that music makes me who I am. I took on music when I was 16 and started out as a DJ at weddings.” He said the experience made him more sociable and he quickly learned to adapt in social settings. Entering talent competitions helped hone his stage personality and presence, no doubt a crucial skill to have.

Shaun used to work in a bank but confessed that he realised soon enough that the corporate world was not where he belonged. He shared that he has always been an entertainer; he’s the guy with the guitar at a braai. “I take my guitar wherever I go. I used to play in the church band and I love seeing people happy. Music really keeps me busy.” Shaun Dee does alternative covers and covers of different kinds of songs. He said he takes a song and changes it to a tune that is relevant to South Africa. “I love local artists such as Glaskas, The Parlotones and Karen Zoid. I am also inspired by OneRepublic,” he added.

The singer also writes his own songs and he currently has two that he will debut at the upcoming African Effect fundraiser at Welridge Academy. “I was contacted by an old friend who asked if I was still working as a DJ or MC. I was then contacted by the organisation and when I heard it was for rhino, I just had to get involved. Conservation really appeals to me and combining that with what I love, it is going to be magical.” This will also be the first live performance for the artist. ”I am nervous but I know that if I put too much pressure on myself, I won’t enjoy myself. I look forward to the overall entertainment; it’s not about singing the perfect note but people having a good time.”

He revealed that he is currently writing music and hopes to record his first album in the near future. The artist, who is independent, hopes to approach record labels once he has a few singles out. In the meantime, he can be found on Facebook as Shaun Dee Artist.
