Department of Housing distances itself from housing scam

The Department confirmed to the Northsider/Record that the information is false and the use of the former MMC of Housing Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso’s logo and picture for people to be lured is false and fake.

On Wednesday, November 17 City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) Department of Housing issued a press release informing the public of a recent housing scam.

CoJ expressed its dismayed about the recent communication by certain individuals who want to defraud vulnerable citizens by sending false messages about upcoming activities that the Department is to host.

It was reported that a poster is currently being circulated on social media about housing allocations that will take place on December 10.

According to CoJ, the Department wants to inform the public that since November 1, when the Local Government Elections took place, they have not had an Executive in the City, let alone members of the mayoral committee.

The Department revealed that there is no communication that would be relayed by any councillor or PR councillor, as they are yet to be sworn in.

On Monday, November 15 the acting City Manager communicated that the inaugural council sitting scheduled for Wednesday, November 17 and Thursday, November 18 had been rescheduled for November 22 and 23.

The Department of Housing and the City distance themselves from such communication and forewarn the public to disregard such communication.

The Department confirmed to the Northsider/Record that the information is false and the use of the former MMC of Housing Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso’s logo and picture for people to be lured is false and fake.

Members of the public are reminded that any communication that is related to the Department or the City, will come through the website or official pages of the Department.
