Roodepoort beat banger dreams of a youth academy

“The sight of people dancing to my selection and having a good time fulfils me; it fuels my passion for music even further."

The role of a DJ is to set the mood and ambience of a party. As the saying goes, “If the beat is right, I’m gonna dance all night”.

Many people in Roodepoort have their favourite DJs whom they would love to get to know and perhaps decipher where all their creative talents ooze from.

From a very young age Hpcornerstone resident musician DJ Sandile Mkhwanazi, popularly known as DJ Nkandla, has always been curious about the world of music and what happens behind the decks.

Luckily for him, in 2009 he met Kabelo Letlhake (DJ Kabza) who is now a great friend of his. DJ Kabza had a sound system and was more than willing to teach his newfound friend how to play.

Since then DJ Nkandla has never looked back and is pursuing his love for music.

“The sight of people dancing to my selection and having a good time fulfils me; it fuels my passion for music even further.

“My advice to young upcoming DJs would be to never give up on their passion for music, no matter what obstacles they might face.

“They should keep perfecting their craft and knocking on doors to get their name out there,” said DJ Nkandla.

When asked by the Record where he saw himself in the next five years, the popular beat banger did not hesitate to reveal his dream of having an academy for young children who would like to become DJs come to fruition.

“I’ve sat down with Katlego Masemola, the founder of the organisation Kopano Yabana, to discuss teaching a few of the children under her care how to DJ.

“I truly believe that this will empower the music-oriented youth of Roodepoort and I want to provide this opportunity for them,” he explained.

DJ Nkandla confirmed to the Record that he did cast his vote in the November 1 elections, and shared his reason for doing so.

“I’ve seen the power of my vote work for me before. We look for sponsorships and so on from the government and my vote allows me to be able to knock on their doors for opportunities and be heard. Also, every South African should exercise their right to vote,” said DJ Nkandla.
