Shootout with police – three sentenced to 15 years

A 15-year jail sentence was handed down to three thugs for possession of an unlicensed firearm, and for attempted murder.

Three suspects who were arrested in Cosmo City in 2020 were sentenced in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court to 15 years in prison recently. According to Captain Balan Muthan, communications officer for Honeydew Police, the suspects were arrested by the Honeydew Reaction Unit for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as attempted murder.

“On November 21 last year, we received information about people carrying firearms at the Extension 4 bridge and we went there. The suspects noticed us and sped away in a Ford Figo,” he explained, saying that a shootout ensued shortly after that. “We chased them; they fired shots at us and we returned fire until we managed to stop them. We arrested three suspects and one firearm was recovered from the scene.”

Muthan said the suspects were detained and appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court where they were ultimately sentenced.
