Horison Blockwatch floods streets as a reminder to be safe and vigilant

HBW aiming to build a strong community network of concerned residents

Community unity is the first barrier against criminality.

To promote the work of dedicated patrol men and women while showing community solidarity, Horison Blockwatch (HBW) held a walk against crime, October 16. They gathered at the park on the corner of Judd Street and Paul Kruger Avenue for a Saturday morning briefing, before combing through adjacent streets spreading a message of solidarity and participation.

Supported by their dedicated security companies, National Fire and Security, Help24 and Dowry, patrollers split the crowd into three groups to maximise resources and impact. Anti-crime walkers then handed out informative pamphlets, brought smiles to neighbours’ faces and built a few friendships on their leisurely walk through the area’s beautiful leafy streets.

HBW provides a valuable service by being the eyes and ears of the community. Patrollers alert residents to suspicious persons or activity as well as monitor anything that may seem out of place. “We really appreciate working with Horison Blockwatch. Visibility plays a vital role in stopping crime,” said Help24 CEO Chris Diederiks. “Everything is community-driven and participation is key. Our companies work hard and the blockwatch is an important component of that work,” added National Security and Fire Community Development Manager, Okkie Nel.

ActionSA donated water to keep crime fighters hydrated and after their stroll, participants were treated to a braai with refreshments provided by HBW. “As a blockwatch we would like raise awareness of crime in our area. We would love to bring the community together to embark on this cause with us,” said HBW’s Jennifer Labuschagne.

HBW will do it all again on November 20 so get down to the park to help spread the anti-crime message.
