Honeydew CPF and police urge the public to be vigilant

We request that residents report these crimes as resources are deployed based on crime trends.”

After recent complaints about smash-and-grab incidents at the N1 South Beyers Naude off-ramp, the Honeydew Community Policing Forum patrollers and Honeydew Police members decided to do a high-visibility standoff there.

On Wednesday, October 20 Honeydew CPF and Honeydew Police took the time to speak to commuters to remind them to be vigilant at all times, and not keep valuables on their seats where they’re visible to criminals.

“The most important thing is for residents to stay vigilant and aware of people around them.

“Do not sit on your phones when waiting at any intersection. We also request that residents report these crimes as resources are deployed based on crime trends,” said Honeydew CPF PRO, Michael Steyn.

Most smash-and-grab incidents occur during peak traffic between 06:00 and 08:00, and 16:00 and 20:00. Unfortunately women are targeted much more frequently than men usually because they tend to carry handbags and have more items of value in their vehicles.

They are also seen as easier targets since they are unlikely to be able to defend themselves or take any defensive actions.

Female motorists need to be extra vigilant and develop a sound safety routine to ensure they always keep themselves safe and protected.

Foreign students or tourists are advised to read the guide to safety and security in South Africa specifically for them.

Members of the community wanting to join the CPF volunteer patrollers are advised to get in contact with Jon Rosenberg on 082 450 2305.

Seven tips to avoid a smash-and-grab incident:

• Keep valuables, bags and other items in your car’s boot

• Smash-and-grab-proof your windows

• Keep windows and doors locked

• Avoid boxing yourself in

• Stay alert and vigilant

• Stay in your vehicle and beware of vendors, beggars and people standing at intersections

• Park in well-lit and populated areas
