Public warned to be alert after vehicle stolen at Witpoortjie vaccination site

Vehicle recovered in Soweto after case opened with Roodepoort Police

Whether tracking the vulnerable or those seeking safety, vultures are sure to circle.

A Witpoortjie resident taking the vaccination plunge returned to his parking space to find what every vehicle owner dreads … nothing. Rich Cooper went to the vaccination site at the Witpoortjie Recreation Centre around 13:00 on Tuesday, August 31, and while receiving his shot his champagne-gold Toyota Yaris was stolen from the site’s parking lot.

In the half an hour it took for Rich to go through the vaccination process, thieves were able to bypass his alarm, access his vehicle, and drive away with his prized asset. Fortunately, Rich had a tracker in the vehicle and the car was later recovered from a suspected chop-shop in Soweto. Photos taken at the Lenasia VIS show the damage left behind by the criminals. The public are urged to be aware of those lurking around the centre.

Florida Police designated the section of Clarendon Street outside the Discoverers Hospital as vehicle theft hotspot shortly after that vaccination site opened, and the public are warned of a possible repeat. Hoping to raise the alarm and spare anyone the same aggravation, Rich said, “Please let everyone know that if they go for their vaccination that there is no security there and your cars are not safe”.
