Mother’s sweet dream comes true

'Without that donor I wouldn't have had the financial kick-start I needed to make this happen.'

Where there is a will, there is a way. Few things can compete with a single mother’s determination to take care of her children. Carica Mostert proved just that when she had to relocate from Cape Town to Roodepoort to start a new life for herself and her three children.

For the past eight years she has been baking full-time, and for the past five years it has been their only source of income. It’s safe to say that the only thing which has kept them going was Carica’s love of baking.

After the Record’s interview with her at the beginning of August, her dream of opening her own shop – whether it’s a coffee shop, bakery or even a home industry – has started to materialise.

“I approached a local shopping centre nearby and asked them about their vacant shops. One of the shop owners told me that he only recently started thinking about renting out one of his shops that is being used as storage space. That’s when I knew it was meant to be,” she said.

Thanks to a generous donor, she was able to secure the deposit and buy an oven for the shop.

“Without that donor I wouldn’t have had the financial kick-start I needed to make this happen. I want to thank that donor from the bottom of my heart. He/ she made my dream come true. I simply have to make this work; there is no other way,” Carica said.

She’s looking forward to selling her delicious baked goodies and showcasing the community’s hand-made products in order to boost their sales. Feeling excited, nervous and scared at the same time, Carica is proud to announce that the shop is expected to open anytime from the middle of September.

The shop is currently being renovated and will receive a full make-over.
