Two sections of Florida starting September with some spring cleaning

Community urged to get out in numbers to help their neighbours

Regardless of the suburb, every street has a shared commitment and duty to make things better.

Two neighbouring Florida suburbs will begin their preparation for summer by clearing away the winter debris this first weekend of spring. Community groups from Florida Park and Florida South will have their first cleaning operation for many months, aiming to unite their communities in a shared sense of pride and responsibility.

Focusing on Len Rutter Park on September 4, Florida Blockwatch will be filling rubbish bags with litter and debris from 8:00 on Saturday morning. The blockwatch has identified several areas in need of attention, and is asking residents to join their neighbours in the re-beautification of the much-loved park. The clean-up will double as an opportunity to highlight other issues in the surrounding streets that need addressing.

Closer to Florida Lake, the Florida South Residents Association (FSRA) is taking a more personally immediate approach to their clean-up. FSRA chairperson, Rodney Churchyard, is calling on those in his community to take care of the street directly outside their homes. Rodney is asking that at 10:00 on Saturday morning, every resident walks outside their gate to clean the debris from the curb outside their house. Rodney put together a short video to explain the cleaning of the curb, commonly known as ‘skoffelling’.

Both bodies are served by passionate individuals who believe that together, the problems facing their suburbs can be solved. For more information on how to get involved at Len Rutter Park, contact Carrie Qualls on 081 595 5177; and for the FSRA, call Rodney on 082 700 9454.
