Armed robberies, theft and housebreakings are a constant recurrence in the Muldersdrift area. Posts about an attack on community groups on Facebook and WhatsApp have unfortunately become the daily bread of many residents and community members in the area.
A resident of Glory Road, Rietfontein was left reeling after an armed robbery on August 13.
According to the police report, the victim was woken up by the loud sound of a breaking window. “When she went to look in her living room she saw three men, one armed with a firearm,” spokesperson for the Muldersdrift Police, Sergeant Mulalo Ndou explained. The homeowner screamed and one of the intruders fired a shot in her direction.
Scared for her life, the resident retreated to her bedroom while the thugs ransacked her house and took a TV and a cellphone.
The very next day, on August 14, a couple in College Road survived a harrowing armed robbery during which they were tied up and shot at. At around 21:30 the woman was woken up by a suspicious noise in her house. She initially thought it was her husband but was shocked to find intruders in her home.
Sergeant Mulalo Ndou, Muldersdrift Police communications officer said the four thugs, armed with a firearm and a crowbar, gained entry to the property. “They took the woman to the living room and tied her hands with an electrical cord.”
The intruders were interrupted by the victim’s husband. “When he entered the house two shots were fired at him but they hit the wall. He did no sustain any injuries,” Ndou explained.
The four robbers allegedly made off with a TV, laptop and jewellery. Arrests have yet to be made.
Ndou said both cases are currently under investigation. Community members with information relating to these or other criminal incidents are encouraged to go to the police.
