Vaccination site opens in Muldersdrift

Residents trickled in to register and receive the first jab of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The Thusong Service Centre in Video informal settlement is the latest to be approved by the Department of Health as a vaccination site. From July 26 to July 30, residents of Video and surrounding areas in Muldersdrift who qualify can get the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine there.

Leader of the vaccination team in Muldersdrift, Kedibone Chaoke said the centre would be operating from 09:00 until 14:00. “We are optimistic that the turnout will be good. We will be here the whole week, depending on the number of people that come to get vaccinated.” She noted that although the first days tend to be slower, from there onward they expect more people to come to be vaccinated.

On July 26, the community hall in Tsepisong in Roodepoort also opened its doors as a vaccination site. Manager for Region C Clinics, Rose Legwale said everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated. “You don’t have to live in Tsepisong to receive the vaccine.” She said walk-ins were welcome, all that was needed is an ID or passport, and a cellphone to remind the persons of their second jab.

Zandspruit Value Centre is another site where citizens can get their vaccine. To date, 2,31 million South Africans are fully vaccinated, and 10% of the population has received at least one dose.

Registrations are currently open for people 35 years and older, which can be done online or in person at their closest vaccination site. “People need to register so that they are on the database. When you are on the system, it gives us a clear picture of everyone that has been vaccinated,” Legwale explained.

During his address on Sunday, July 25, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that people aged 18 to 34 would be eligible to get vaccinated on September 1. The number of positive cases is still relatively high, and while more and more people are getting vaccinated, it is good to remember that we are not completely out of the woods yet. Mask-wearing, sanitizing regularly and social distancing still need to be observed.
