Animal outreach in Video informal settlement

Muldersdrift Cares feeds and provides free vaccines to dogs in informal settlements.

Muldersdrift Cares fed and provided rabies vaccines for 28 dogs in the Video informal settlement on July 7. The organisation also dewormed and treated dogs for ticks and fleas.

Founder of Muldersdrift Cares, Shenan Cochrane said the animal outreach programme also provided dog food to last a month. “Yesterday a dog was surrendered to us after the owner wanted to kill it. A woman in the community asked him to surrender the animal to us and called me. That dog is currently being fostered. Through fundraising and donations, we are able to assist owners and their animals. People are struggling and the circumstances are often very desperate.”

The organisation works in different communities and informal settlements in Muldersdrift where they try to vaccinate as many animals as they can. Shenan said they started a year ago and since then the rate of infection has gone down. She shared that during the operation in Video, they had a queue of people with their puppies. “People are trying to care for their animals.”

They work with the Department of Agriculture and state vets to sterilise, treat wounds, de-worm, treat rabies and assist after poisonings. “Food donation is a big thing for us because that is what a lot of people need help with – food and sterilisations,” Shenan said. She said they help people feed and care for their animals because, “If you are in a community, you have to be a part of it”.
