Cupcakes for Flora staff

Residents in Constantia Kloof had 470 cupcakes baked, which they delivered to the staff at Life Flora Hospital for Mandela Day.

Residents in Constantia Kloof pooled together and delivered more than 400 cupcakes for the staff at Life Flora Hospital. Community members challenged each other and collected money towards the cupcakes.

This was not only part of their initiative for Mandela Day but a way to extend their gratitude to the healthcare workers who continue to show up and work around the clock as the third wave of Covid-19 rages on.

Community leader, John Baisley said, “A number of our residents have been ill and admitted to Flora. I asked the residents for suggestions and we ended up doing something for the hospital. Fortunately, we have someone in the area who bakes.“

Residents were certainly in the spirit of giving as they convoyed together to the hospital where they delivered the 470 cupcakes, baked by Cheryl Black. The sweet treats took 12 hours to bake, and Cheryl commandeered her entire family to help her and ensure that the order was completed on time. “I love the community and this is such a great initiative. Everyone got involved and I got my entire family to help,” Cheryl shared.

Between the looting, unrest and the unforgiving grip of the third wave, the past week has been full or uncertainty and anxiety for many communities. However, many ordinary citizens have come together in their own capacity to donate to communities affected by the looting, and to help residents rebuild.

Ward 89 councillor, Amelia Bester said it was fantastic to see the community come together and do something nice for other people and pay it forward. “There have seen smiles all around as everyone enjoyed doing this. It’s a great way to say ‘you are not alone, you have a neighbour’. We want to see more communities coming together like this.”
