How to isolate safely at home

Here is how to isolate at home while keeping your family safe from exposure.

Positive Covid-19 cases continue to skyrocket in South Africa with thousands of cases reported daily. It is imperative to take note of helpful tips that you can use should you or a loved ever contract the virus. Simple home remedies can go a long way to prevent infection or severe symptoms.

• Get a Pulse Oximeter to monitor oxygen saturation levels.

• Steam four times per day to open up the airways.

• Do breathing exercises.

For people who have tested positive or are experiencing mild/ manageable symptoms, isolating at home is often the best option to beat the virus, coupled with home remedies. Marketing and Communications coordinator at Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital, Celia de Koker gave the following tips for quarantining at home.

• Clean your hands with soap and water frequently.

• Wear a face mask when in the same room (or vehicle) as other people.

• At home, stay in a specific room and use your own bathroom (where possible). If you live in shared accommodation such as university halls, with a communal kitchen, bathroom and living area, you should stay in your room with the door closed. Only come out when necessary, wearing a facemask.

• Avoid sharing household items such as dishes, cups, eating utensils and towels. After using any of these, they should be thoroughly washed with soap and water.

• Monitor your symptoms – seek prompt medical attention if your illness worsens, for instance, if you have difficulty breathing. If it is not an emergency, call your doctor or healthcare facility.

Remember to practise social distancing when out in public and to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer regularly, and to keep your face mask on at all times. Registration for the vaccine for citizens in the 35-49 years old age group opened on July 15.
