Former Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer, Bongani Silence Baloyi has received a sentence of 18 years imprisonment for premeditated murder relating to an October 2019 road-rage incident near Honeydew.

On Tuesday, June 15 Baloyi appeared in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg where he was sentenced for murder and three counts of attempted murder.

Baloyi shot and killed Seja Lawrence Nkwana on October 3 last year while Nkwana and three passengers were travelling towards Honeydew.

Nkwana who was shot in the head, abdomen and chest shortly after the drivers reportedly had a heated argument, succumbed to his injuries.

After the incident, according to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), Baloyi handed himself over to police officials he found near the scene. His firearm was confiscated and he was later arrested.

“Upon finalising its investigation, IPID consulted the office of the Director of Public Prosecution for prosecutorial decision, which was granted.

“IPID welcomed Baloyi’s sentencing and hopes that it sends a strong message that officers of the law are not above the law.

“They have an obligation to conduct themselves within the confines of the law at all the time,” said IPID spokesperson, Ndileka Cola.
